Shield alternatives after the shutdown: what to replace it with, depending on what you actually used it for

Shield ran for seven years on a Chrome extension that read your logged-in LinkedIn session. In May 2026 its co-founder wrote that LinkedIn and Google had made clear it could not continue that way. The lesson is bigger than one tool, and the right replacement depends on which half of Shield you miss.

What happened to Shield

Shield launched in 2019 as a LinkedIn analytics dashboard for personal profiles: impressions, engagement, follower growth, your full post history, top posts, and team leaderboards for employee advocacy. It pulled that data through a Chrome extension that read your logged-in LinkedIn session, because when it was built the official API did not expose personal-profile post analytics. LinkedIn opened a member post analytics API in July 2025 and expanded its metrics in 2026, but it is gated to approved partners, which is one reason extension-based tools persisted.

On May 18, 2026 co-founder Andreas Jonsson announced the wind-down. The announcement, as quoted by several outlets from the company's wind-down page, said that "both Google and LinkedIn made it clear that we could not continue operating Shield as it was built", and that the team "decided not to fight it". Reporting at the time said the extension had been pulled from the Chrome Web Store. No end date was given. By late September 2026 the site returned a paused-deployment page with no sign-in and no export, which is what we saw when we checked on September 30.

We found no published refund policy and no official migration recommendation from Shield. If you still have data you need, the window for exporting it from Shield appears to have closed.

The lesson for every extension-based tool

Shield was not doing anything exotic. Reading the session a user is already logged into is how most LinkedIn analytics and automation extensions work, because it is the only way to get data the official API does not provide. That is also why LinkedIn can act against any of them at any time, and why it is the user's account that carries the risk. Taplio's terms, for example, say that if using Taplio breaches LinkedIn's terms the consequences for your account are yours. Kleo's co-founder has written that its original free extension received a cease-and-desist from LinkedIn before the product was rebuilt.

So the first filter for a replacement is: does it work through LinkedIn's official API with your OAuth consent, or through an extension on your session? The official API gives less data. It is also the arrangement that does not disappear on a Monday.

Which Shield did you use?

Shield users split into two groups, and most "Shield alternatives" lists ignore the split.

You used it for analytics. You wrote your own posts and wanted to know what worked: impressions over time, your best posts, follower growth, a history you could export. Go to the next section.

You used it to keep yourself posting. The dashboard was a scoreboard that made you write. What you actually need is the writing and publishing to happen, with enough of a signal that it is working. Skip to "If the scoreboard was the point".

If you need analytics

Be clear about what is available. LinkedIn's official API provides page analytics for company pages, and since 2025 personal-profile post analytics, to approved partners only; outside that partner programme the data is limited, which is why so many tools used an extension. The tools below are the ones whose own pages describe their analytics and their connection method.

AuthoredUp, $19.95 a month ($16.63 on annual), 14-day trial with no card. Analytics dashboard with impressions, saves, sends, profile views, best times to post, follower growth, CSV export, plus an editor with formatting and previews. It runs as a Chrome extension, but states "No automation. No cookies." and that it performs no automated actions, with data hosted in Germany. This is the closest thing to Shield's analytics for a personal profile and it has published a guide for Shield users. A Chrome Web Store review from 2025 complained about sync problems; its rating there is 4.7 on 70 reviews.

Buffer, $6 a month per channel. Analytics on paid plans for LinkedIn pages (impressions, clicks, reactions, comments, reposts, engagement rate) through the official API, plus scheduling across every major network (Buffer counts a LinkedIn profile and a company page as separate channels). Profile-level depth is thinner than Shield had. Free plan available.

MagicPost, $49 a month (the Growth tier, which has analytics and no AI writing; $29 on annual) through the official API as a LinkedIn-verified partner. The same company sells Kliver Analytics at $19 a month as a standalone.

Taplio, $39 a month Starter for analytics and scheduling with a benchmark dataset. Extension-based for its in-LinkedIn features; read its terms on account risk before connecting. Its 7-day trial is full-access and its terms state a 30-day refund.

None of these will give you Shield's retroactive full-history import for a personal profile through the official API. If a tool promises that, ask how it gets the data.

If the scoreboard was the point

Many Shield users were professionals who had made themselves post by watching the numbers. If the numbers are gone and the posting stops, the dashboard was never the product; consistency was. Two kinds of tool address that directly.

Writing tools that draft for you to edit: Supergrow ($19 a month, interview-to-post, official API), ContentIn ($39 a month, your week planned every Sunday from your own material, official API), MagicPost Creator ($69 a month monthly, $39 on annual, official API). All three keep you as the editor and publisher, which for some people is exactly the right amount of involvement.

A ghostwriter that writes, checks and publishes on a schedule: PostAgent, $79 a month, builds a brief from everything you have written plus an interview about your actual work, writes from that, runs every post through a separate claims check (a reader in your field with web search, a second read, a second opinion from a different vendor's model, a verifier, repair, re-read) and holds anything it cannot clear. You get the week's posts by email before they go out. It publishes through LinkedIn's official API with no extension. It does not have an analytics dashboard of impressions and likes yet, so if Shield's charts were the thing you loved, say so when you try it; if what you loved was that you were posting, this is the tool that makes that happen without you. 7-day trial without a card. How it works.

Questions people ask

Is Shield coming back?

We found no announcement of a relaunch, an acquirer or a successor product from the Shield team. The wind-down page said the team decided not to fight the platform decisions. As of September 30, 2026 the site shows a paused deployment.

Can I get my Shield data?

At the time of the announcement every guide recommended exporting CSVs and screenshots while still logged in. By September 2026 the app was no longer reachable, so if you did not export then, we are not aware of a way to recover it. Your posts themselves are still on LinkedIn.

Why did LinkedIn allow Shield for seven years and then not?

We do not know LinkedIn's reasoning and will not guess. What is public is that Shield's method, an extension reading the user's session, is outside the official API, that the extension was removed from the Chrome Web Store, and that Shield's founders chose to close rather than contest it. Any tool using the same method is exposed to the same decision.

Which replacement is safest?

One that uses only LinkedIn's official API with your consent: Buffer, Supergrow, ContentIn, MagicPost, PostAgent. AuthoredUp is an extension but states it automates nothing and reads no cookies, which is the lowest-risk way to be an extension. We cannot predict LinkedIn's enforcement against any specific vendor.

Where this comes from. PostAgent is a LinkedIn ghostwriter that read everything you ever wrote: it learns your voice from your own material, and a separate check reads every claim in every post against that material and the public record before anything publishes. That is the lens these pages are written with, and it is why every competitor price here is read on the vendor's own site and dated. How it works · Pricing
